Dr. Tony Campolo will speak at First United Methodist of Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday June 19 at 7:00 p.m. The special evening with Dr. Campolo is sponsored by World Week and is open to the public. There is no admission charge, although an offering will be taken. Dr. Campolo is a best-selling author and has 25 books in print. His weekly television program, "Hashing It Out," is carried by the Odyssey cable television network into 22 million homes. Featuring Campolo and preacher Steve Brown of Orlando, Fla., the program the program is an extension of Campolo's book, "Is Jesus a Republican or Democrat?" -- modeling how those from differing viewpoints can disagree, but still learn from each other and use the Bible in working through today's hot-button issues. World Week is an exciting program that encourages understanding and raises awareness of important global issues - health, education, environment, justice and peace - and helps people suffering from violence, disease, hunger, human rights abuses and environmental devastation. Participants become God's advocates for the persecuted, broaden their understanding of issues that affect the poor, especially women, and help protect the environment.
He is a professor of sociology and also director of the Urban Studies Program at Eastern College an evangelical university in St. Davids, Pa. For 10 years he was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. He did his undergraduate work at Eastern College and earned his Ph.D. from Temple University. He is the founder and president of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization involved in educational, medical and economic development programs in various Third World countries including Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This organization also has done extensive work among at-risk young people in urban America. Dr. Campolo is also an associate pastor of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, and serves as an associate for international ministries of American Baptist Churches.
